Thyroid Concerns

The thyroid affects many body functions. Symptoms that seem related can overlap with other health concerns, so careful evaluation matters.

Educational information—not a diagnosis.

Symptoms and health measurements can have many possible explanations. Primary care can help coordinate appropriate screening, monitoring, and next steps, but this page cannot diagnose a condition or replace individual medical advice.

A clearer place to start.

Thyroid hormones help regulate how the body uses energy. Too little or too much thyroid hormone can affect many systems, but symptoms such as fatigue, weight change, heart-rate changes, and feeling unusually hot or cold can have other explanations too.

When to bring it up.

  • Ongoing changes in energy, temperature tolerance, heart rate, bowel habits, skin or hair, or weight.
  • A neck lump, swelling, discomfort, or a personal or family history of thyroid disease.
  • Questions about previous thyroid tests, thyroid medication, pregnancy planning, or a change in symptoms.

Seek urgent care for chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, severe palpitations, severe agitation, or sudden swelling that affects breathing or swallowing.
